Riva is a small sconce that glows rather than shines. The hand-blown shade comes in four glasses, and each one changes the light on its way out. Amber turns the bulb into something closer to a coal: warm, low and entirely without glare, which is what you want on a wall you will be lying next to. Clear is the brightest and the most neutral, leaving the wall behind the colour it actually is. Smoke is the most restrained, a grey tint deep enough to hide the bulb so that only the shade itself is lit. Coffee sits between amber and smoke: it lights warm but reads dark and solid when it is off.

Mount a pair at shoulder height either side of a bed, or one beside a mirror where a downlight would carve shadows into a face. The black arm keeps the fitting grounded so the glass reads as the only soft thing on the wall. With the clear shade the bulb is visible, so a frosted or opal LED keeps it comfortable to sit beside.
